—Big Bad Wolf's popular quote

Big Bad Wolf, or just Wolfie, is a talking wolf who hangs out with the other Fairy Tale Creatures. He rarely speaks, usually only having one or two lines in major installments.

Appearances[]

The Big Bad Wolf is always seen wearing the clothes of Little Red Riding Hood's grandmother. Unlike his typical portrayal in fairytales, the Wolf is harmless and mild-mannered, and is on good terms with the Three Little Pigs.

Shrek[]

The Big Bad Wolf first appears among the many fairytale creatures banished to Shrek's swamp by Lord Farquaad. Shrek discovers him lying in his bed and throws him out of his house. He is seen attending Shrek and Fiona's wedding and dances with a Duloc Guard. In Shrek's Karaoke Dance Party he sings "Who Let The Dogs Out" along with The Three Little Pigs.

Shrek 2[]

The Big Bad Wolf is found living in Fiona's tower by Prince Charming, who mistakes him for the princess. Wolfie corrects him and tells him that Fiona has already been rescued and as is on her honeymoon, much to Charming's shock. While Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey stay in Far Far Away, Wolfie and other fairytale creatures watch over the swamp. They happen to see a broadcast of Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots getting arrested by guards while watching T.V. on the Magic Mirror. The group then go to the prison and help the trio escape. The Big Bad Wolf also helps Shrek defeat Fairy Godmother by blowing a fierce, ferocious gust of wind at her, causing her to drop her wand. He is seen playing the flamenco guitar during the song "Livin' la Vida Loca."

In the short, Far Far Away Idol, he sings "Hungry Like A Wolf" by Duran Duran with the Three Little Pigs as his backup singers but they got scared and ran off.

Shrek the Third[]

The Big Bad Wolf was at Fiona's baby shower and gave her a present, which was a baby carrier. When Prince Charming and Captain Hook broke in, they demanded to know where Shrek was. After failing to get answers from Gingy and Pinocchio, one of the three pigs reveals the ogre's whereabouts out of frustration. After knowing Charming's plan, Pinocchio exclaims "He'll never fall for your tricks!," which causes his nose to grow. Wolfie responds by saying "Oh, Boy." He appears again with the fairytale creatures when planning their attack on the villains. When the members are trying to think of a team name, he sarcastically remarks his desire for the name "Team Alpha Wolf Squadron." Before the ambush, he is disguised as an actor in a bear costume in Charming's play. He is quickly captured by one of the guards, and is set free after the villains reform.

Shrek the Halls[]

The Wolf joins Christmas at Shrek's swamp. He is enjoying the festivities and later kicks Pinocchio when the creatures spend the night at the swamp.

Shrek Forever After[]

He makes a brief appearance at the ogre triplets' birthday party. He is blowing up balloons. but keeps accidentally popping them when blowing too hard. When Shrek enters the alternate reality, Wolfie was Rumpelstiltskin's Wig handler and was wearing a maid outfit. His only line in the film is "Yes Mr. Stiltskin." He is later seen wearing a Shrek costume, with the three pigs trying to pass him off as the real Shrek. Rumpel says to them "That's just sad."

Deleted scenes show that originally, however, Big Bad Wolf would have joined several of the other fairytale creatures (Gingy, the Three Blind Mice, the Three Little Pigs, and Pinocchio) to ambush Shrek. After Pinocchio ties Shrek up with his puppet strings, Wolfie would have assisted by using his powerful breath to huff, puff, and blow the immobilized green hero into a drop in the floor, from where Pinocchio would kick the ogre down, landing him in a cart to be delivered to Rumpelstiltskin alongside Donkey and Puss. Director Mike Mitchell explained that this sequence was cut due to there already being too much story to tell within this act of the film. Another reason was the crew felt it was too dark to show Big Bad Wolf and the others being so mean to Shrek.

Scared Shrekless[]

Wolfie was dressed as a witch when he and his friends joined Donkey in trying to scare Shrek. He then joins Shrek as he and the others travel to Duloc to tell scary stories. He doesn't stay for long and leaves both out of boredom and to look after the pigs, as the pigs were "his ride".

The Pig Who Cried Werewolf[]

After moving in next door to the Three Little Pigs, a bag full of kitchen knives accidentally falls. He suspiciously darts his eyes in hopes no one noticed. Later on, he is shown to bury the bag of knives in a hole. Heimlich, the brick pig, notices as Wolfie is trying to hide the shovel from his view. When night falls, it is revealed that under the light of the full moon, he turns into a Lady named Chef. In this form, he digs up the bag of knives and kidnaps each of the three pigs, inviting them to dinner. After feeding the pigs, he turns back into his normal form when the clouds cover the moon. He asks if the pigs saw anything weird, with the pigs telling him of the strange actions and behavior he displayed. Wanting to save the pigs, he tells them to get out of his house before Chef can turn them into "stuffed piggies in a blanket." The pigs make a run for the hills while Chef continues to try and slice them. Wolfie encourages them to keep running after giving up on saving them.

Swamp Talk[]

The Wolf was referenced several times in the series, having the most mentions compared to the other fairytale characters. His most prominent mention however was "Big Bad Wolf Retires?", where he was spotted going to a retirement home to get a new granny dress. This had been taking the wrong way, as the wolf had been planning another attack on a granddaughter.

Video Game Appearances[]

Shrek: Reekin' Havoc[]

Wolf appears as one of the bosses, under possession of Lord Farquaad's ghost.

Shrek 2 (video game)[]

Big Bad Wolf is a playable character in Shrek 2. He is playable in Prison Break, The Mines and Cookie, Cookie. His fighting style involves a mix of claw swipes and bites, and his special ability allows him to knock away enemies, activate machinery and blow out fires with a powerful gust of air.

In Prison Break, he helps Gingy, Lil' Red and Fairy break Shrek, Donkey and Puss out of prison. His Hero Time involves him climbing the "Staircase of Doom" to retrieve the keys to the three's cell.

In The Mines, he directs the party through the mines as part of a shortcut to make it back to Far Far Away, having been a "Big Bad Sherpa" during his "puppyhood". During the opening cutscene, he attempts to bite open a lock, but fails because it is cursed and is pushed aside by Shrek and Donkey.

In Cookie, Cookie, he helps protect Mongo by fighting off the knights and uses his breath to put out the fires around Far Far Away.

Shrek Super Slam[]

Big Bad Wolf is a unlockable playable character. Much like in the Shrek 2 video game, Big Bag Wolf fights with a series of claw swipes and blowing "huff n' puff" winds at his opponents. His Super Slam is a much stronger "huff n' puff" wind that hits multiple opponents at once. In game, he is referred to as "Huff N' Puff Wolf" when selected and wears a red night gown instead of the faded pink one from the films.

Shrek Smash and Crash Racing[]

He appears as the mount of Red Riding Hood, who is an unlockable character in the game.

Abilities[]

Big Bad Wolf, like in the Three Little Pigs fairy tale, is capable of blowing strong winds, an ability which he used against the Fairy Godmother in the second film and would have used in Shrek Forever After, as shown in a deleted scene. At least within the altered reality created from Shrek's contract with Rumpelstiltskin, it is shown that the force of the Wolfie's breath is powerful enough to push back even a defiant Shrek.

In The Pig Who Cried Werewolf, he is shown to transform into a different form under the full moon which is an unnerving woman named Chef. He is aware of this transformation and warns the Three Little Pigs to avoid him during the full moon. This is likely non-canon and exclusive to the short film.

Trivia[]

  • The magazine he's reading in the Fiona's bed is called "Pork Illustrated". This is a parody of real life magazine Sports Illustrated, well known for their swimsuit cover models. In the musical, he reads a similar magazine.
  • Much like in the fairytale Little Red Riding Hood , Big Bad Wolf is disguised as her grandmother hoping to fool Little Red Riding Hood and eat her. He keeps granny's night gown on for all of his appearances in Shrek media.
    • Wolfie's wearing of traditional women's clothing has led to some confusion over his gender (something Fairy Godmother even acknowledges this in calling him a "gender-confused wolf" in Shrek 2). Further, in Shrek the Musical, Big Bad Wolf has a (tasteless) line in the song "Story of My Life," in which he complains about being called "a hot and tranny mess".
      • Big Bad Wolf simply likes wearing the granny clothes, which was confirmed in Shrek: The Essential Guide.
