Grandma is based of 'Grandmother', appearing in the classic fairytale "Little Red Riding Hood", where she plays the role of being Little Red Riding Hood's loving, but ill grandmother. In the original fairytale, Grandma is eaten by the The Big Bad Wolf, which explains why the Wolf is wearing her clothes in the Shrek series.

It is said she is the one that gives the food to Little Red Riding Hood (in the original fairytale, that is done my Little Red Riding Hood's mother) to take to Hansel's Honeymoon Hideout. When Little Red Riding Hood did this, she ran away shrieking in Shrek 2 after seeing Shrek and Princess Fiona.
